This is the introductory course which provides insight into the concept of Libraries and Society . It also discusses the role of Libraries in the Society. The basic objective of this course is to provide Information about the types of libraries and functions of each type. The course also discusses the basic operations of the libraries.

Course layout

Library, Information and Society is the first course in the BLIS programme. It sets the context for other courses providing the base to understand and develop competence in the other courses. It introduces you to the role and importance of library and other information institutions in the society. Library and information related legislation is discussed in detail which is an important component in providing service according to norms. Library networks and consortia that form the basis of resource sharing are also the part of the course.

Information needs to be organised and managed if it is to be used effectively and efficiently. Any Library and Information Science professional should be competent to select, acquire, organise and retrieve information. Traditional methods like classification and cataloguing help to organise documents. Subject indexing helps to organise micro documents and information per se. With increasing digital information there have been changes in organising, representing, exchanging and retrieving information across platforms. All these concepts are part of this course.
