Mahatma Gandhi has been hailed as the Man of the Twenty-first century. His life and times neatly spreads over three centuries. Born in the latter half of the I9th century, when colonialism spurred by fierce industrialism and consumerism were the dominant ideologies. He develops in the 20th century a comprehensive socio-economic and political theory which embraces every aspect of the life of an individual and society to challenge the prevailing norm.

Human race is engaged in conflict, aggression, warfare, and violence seemingly equate with the human condition since the early days of civilisation. Equally, humans have sought, as long as there has been conflict, to handle conflict effectively by containing or mitigating its negative consequences. This course is an effort to understand some of the major theoretical perspectives of conflict management, conflict transformation and conflict resolution.

Human security entails that a people-centered view of security is indispensable for national, regional and global stability. Human security challenges the traditional notion of national security by arguing that the proper referent for security should be the individual rather than the state. The United Nations Development Programme's 1994 Human Development Report argues that insuring "freedom from want" and "freedom from fear" for all persons is the best path to tackle the problem of global insecurity.

Course layout

This course MGPE-014, Gandhi: Ecology And Sustainable Development aims to impart in-depth knowledge and nuances of the sustenance of life and perpetuity on our Mother Earth. The major focus of the course is to examine the viability and pragmatic relevance of Gandhian vision and mission of human sustainability with eco-friendly approach. It also emphasizes the significance of the Wisdom Tradition of India from where Gandhi ever gained insight, intellect and strength for his life mission with the objective of shedding new light in resolving the human challenges.
