This course is aimed at imparting basic skills in Mandarin Chinese language to the learner. The course focuses on gradual inculcation of speaking, writing and reading ability in the language. It has sections on sounds, pronunciation, tones and the basic grammar. It aims at enabling the beginners to comprehend and communicate in basic Mandarin. It not only enables the learner to speak and communicate in Chinese, but also teaches Chinese characters following the rules of stroke and stroke order.

Instructor bio

Dr. Deepanwita Srivastava

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi

Dr. Deepanwita Srivastava is a faculty and in charge of the French discipline at the School of Foreign Languages, IGNOU. She has a long experience in teaching of French in both Distance and conventional learning models at universities and institutions of Higher education. Her areas of specializations include Didactics of French, Open and Distance Learning, Travel and Mobility studies and Translation.

The Ministry of Education appointed her as Expert for the upcoming Hindi-French Dictionary by the Central Hindi Directorate, Govt. of India. 

She remains involved in programmes for training of French teachers in India and South Asia with the Embassy of France and has guided numerous doctoral theses contributing to knowledge creation in the domain of Didactics of French as a Foreign Language.

Widely published and invited/visiting researcher at several universities internationally, she remains deeply involved in teaching and research.

Prof. Shreeparna Roy
(University of Delhi)
Shreeparna Roy is a Professor at the Dept. of East Asian Studies, University of Delhi. She has teaching experience of 20 years. She holds Bachelors, Masters and M. Phil degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and Ph. D. from Delhi University. She undertook teacher’s training and Chinese language course at Beijing University, China and National Chengchi University, Taiwan. Her publication includes two books, “History of China and Japan, 1840-1950 (2013) and “Book of Proverbs: Chinese, English, Hindi” (2016). Her research areas include Chinese language, literature, education, and gender studies. 

Ms. Dayawanti
(Jawaharlal Nehru University)
Ms. Dayawanti is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Chinese and South East Asian Studies, School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She is teaching Chinese since 2003. She obtained Bachelors and Masters degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University. She has also studied at the East China Normal University,Shanghai for two years. Her area of interest is Chinese language and literature. She has translated Ba Jin’s novel “Family” from Chinese to Hindi (National Book Trust, 2020) and Nirmal Verma’s short story collection “Kavve Aur Kala Pani” from Hindi to Chinese (Sahitya Akademi, 2020). 

Ms. Tanvi Negi
(Doon University)
Tanvi Negi is an Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Chinese Studies, Doon University, Dehradun. She has been teaching Chinese language for ten years. She completed Bachelors and Masters courses from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She has also studied at the South China Normal University at Guangzhou, China for one year. She has translated Lao She’s novel entitled “The Rickshaw Boy” from Chinese to Hindi (National Book Trust, 2019). Her research interests include modern and contemporary Chinese literature and translation studies. 

Prof. Saheli Chattaraj
(Jamia Millia Islamia) 
Saheli Chattaraj is an Assistant Professor at the China Studies Centre, MMAJ Academy of International Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. She has 8 years of teaching experience. She holds Bachelors, Masters and M. Phil degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University. She has also studied at the Hunan Normal University, China (2010-11) and was awarded Taiwan Fellowship by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Taiwan. She was associated with the India-China bilateral project of the Encyclopaedia of India-China Cultural Contacts, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. Her research interest includes Chinese language, literature, contemporary India-China relations, politics, and state and society relations in China. She has published in international and Indian journals and translated Sayed Abdul Malik’s book entitled “Longing for Sunshine” from English to Chinese (Sahitya Akademi, 2020).
