This course introduces you to the concepts of Database, Content Organization and some emerging trends. In any Information Storage and Retrieval System (ISAR), databases occupy the central position. Creation of efficient databases leads to successful retrieval of information contained in that database. A database is an organized collection of related data. In modern library environment, electronic databases are used to support a wide-range of information management operations and services. Knowledge in database concepts and applications becomes essential for the success of information professionals in present society. This course provides instruction on the database concepts, elements of DBMS, Database models, and fundamentals of database design, database implementation with a focus on library and information science practice, use of WINISIS, MySQL and some emerging trends. Related and current database management technologies will be used to illustrate the hands-on experiences.

Dr. V. V. Subrahmanyam is Director, School of Computer and Information Sciences (SOCIS), IGNOU, New Delhi from 14th May, 2018 onwards. He received his doctoral degree PhD (Computer Science) from Jamia Milia Islamia (Central University), New Delhi, M.Tech (Computer Science and Technology) from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam and B.Tech (Computer Science and Engineering) from Nagarjuna University, Guntur. He is faculty in School of Computer and Information Sciences (SOCIS), IGNOU since 1998 and he has over 20+ years of research and teaching experience.
 
His main research interests are in the areas of Database Management Systems and Operating Systems, Data Warehousing, Cloud Computing, Big Data and ICT in Education. He has 53 publications in International Journals, proceedings of International / National conferences and Chapters in Books. He has focused in the last few years on the research issues in Data Warehousing. Currently he is working in the area of BigData and Cloud Computing. He is presently guiding three research scholar pursuing PhD(Computer Science). Recently he was conferred with the prestigious "IRDP Award 2018 – “Teaching and Research Excellence” for the outstanding excellence and remarkable achievements in the field of Teaching, Research and Publications. . He is a LIFE MEMBER of ISTE, ICEIT, ACM and Computer Society of India (CSI). He has visited Vietnam and Hongkong for presenting papers in the International Conferences.
 
He is presently Programme Coordinator for Ph.D(Computer Science) of IGNOU.  He was resource person / Presenter for 47 Interactive Radio Sessions (Phone-In Radio Programmes) held from time to time on Computer Science related topics. He has presented 132 Video / Teleconferencing / EDUSAT/MOOC video programmes from EMPC Studios, IGNOU. He is a resource person for many FDP’s, training programmes, seminars and workshops. Delivered many invited talks at various Universities and Institutes. He is widely involved in course design, courseware development, instructional design, course writing and editing of course materials for various programmes. He contributed Chapters in Springer and other books. He is associated with NMEICT as Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) for the Education Resource Planning (EdRP) project’s ePortfolio and Website Hosting Management System (WHMS) modules IGNOU since Jan, 2011. He was School Board member for various schools of IGNOU. Also reviewer of research papers in the area of ICT and Computer Science for Indian Journal of Open Learning (IJOL), IGNOU, New Delhi, Africa Education Review, ScholarOne Manuscripts, Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, Thomson Reuters and Springer CCS Series and Springer. A MOOC on Database and Content Organisation (Course ID: 1455) was offered to the students on SWAYAM platform, MHRD, Govt. Of India for 3 months (12 weeks) from 1st July, 2017 to 22nd Sept, 2017.. Rerun of this MOOC is continuously going on for every semester till now and attracting huge no. of students. This MOOC has a consistent rating of 4.4 out of 5. Developed eModules for the course Content Development and Management of Library and Information Sciences discipline for ePG-Pathashala, an initiative by MHRD, Project of GOI under NMEICT. Designed and Developed QR-Code Based Course Access for Problem Solving and Programming, Database Management Systems, Operating Systems and Communication Skills Courses of SOCIS, IGNOU in the month of Sept, 2017. He was in the panel as Computer Science Expert in various Selection Committees. He was in the panel of evaluators and evaluated PhD thesis of various Central / State Universities.
