Koha Library Management System

This course comprises 21 audio-video spoken tutorials, using which you can self-learn KOHA Library Management System with ease. 

STEP 1-
Koha version 16.05 is used to record these tutorials. This version will only work on an Ubuntu Linux OS version 16.04 machine.  So, first of all install Ubuntu Linux OS by following the steps given in the first Unit.
The first Unit gives the steps to install Ubuntu Linux operating system on a Virtual Box.
Open the Unit, go through the tutorials for your OS and install Ubuntu Linux on a Virtual Box on your machine.
Cross-verify (as mentioned in the sheet) to confirm successful installation.

STEP 2-

This sheet explains how to learn from spoken tutorials.
This sheet also mentions some important information about the text editors while coding, how to use the command prompt (in Windows OS), how to use the Code Files, how to do the Assignments, etc.
Read this sheet carefully and make a note of all the information, before you begin.
STEP 3-
Follow the side-by-side learning methodology while learning from spoken tutorials - watch the video, listen to the instructions, pause the video, try out the command on your system.  You should get the exact same results as shown in the video.  If successful, proceed with the video.  Else, rewind and watch the video again and replicate the commands shown.

Complete all the videos in the given sequence one by one.
The Assignment for each tutorial is for your self-assessment only.  Do not upload it anywhere for evaluation.

Koha Library Management System

Koha is a first open source Integrated Library System (ILS), used world-wide and was created in 1999 by Katipo Communications. It is a library standard compliant like MARC21/UNIMARC, Unicode, Z39.50, ILL, etc. The first installation went live in January 2000.

Koha allows total customization and complete control of library data at a fraction of the cost of a proprietary system and is serving the needs of a diverse range of libraries from academic to the public and from legal and research to corporate and specialist libraries. Thousands of Koha users are already benefiting from a vibrant and enthusiastic open source community and an ILS that will never leave them out of date. It has been partially translated into 62 languages.

Koha’s main strength is its web accessibility and ease of use. Libraries do not have to install the software on staff and user terminals. Koha supports all library house keeping activities such as Acquisition, Cataloging, Circulation, Serial Control, Patron Management, and OPAC. It also supports Web 2.0 tools. Thus, Koha can be readily configured to the needs of each library and is updated with new features frequently.

The Spoken Tutorial effort for Koha Library Management System series has been contributed by Dr. Bella Tony, and Mrs. Nancy Varkey from the Spoken Tutorial Project, IIT Bombay. The content inputs were given by Dr. Manju Naika Central Library, IIT-Bombay and domain reviews were done by Ms. Samruddhi Hawaldar, Central Library, IIT-Bombay. Novice check for the tutorials was done by Ms. Garima Sharma, BLISc student.
