 This course comprises 10 audio-video spoken tutorials, using which you can self-learn Git version control with ease. 

STEP 1-
First of all install Git by following the steps given in this sheet.

This sheet gives the steps to install Git on Linux and Windows OS.
Open the sheet, read the instructions for your OS and install the Git on your machine.
Cross-verify (as mentioned in the sheet) to confirm successful installation.
For Windows OS, please ensure Notepad ++ is also installed on the machine.
STEP 2-

This sheet explains how to learn from spoken tutorials.
This sheet also mentions some important information about the text editors while coding, how to use the command prompt (in Windows OS), how to use the Code Files, how to do the Assignments, etc.
Read this sheet carefully and make a note of all the information, before you begin.
STEP 3-
Follow the side-by-side learning methodology while learning from spoken tutorials - watch the video, listen to the instructions, pause the video, try out the command on your system.  You should get the exact same results as shown in the video.  If successful, proceed with the video.  Else, rewind and watch the video again and replicate the commands shown.

Complete all the videos in the given sequence one by one.
The Assignment for each tutorial is for your self-assessment only.  Do not upload it anywhere for evaluation.

Introduction to Git

Git was developed by Linus Torvalds in 2005. Git is a distributed version control software. It is a widely used source code management system for software development. It is free and open source software(FOSS). It is useful for Programmers, Web developers, Project managers, Writers and many others. Anyone working with text files, sheets, design files, drawings, etc., can use Git to track versions.

Git manages the changes in documents, computer programs and web sites etc. It provides a historical record of what you have done over time. It allows developers to work collaboratively. In Git, conflicts can be easily resolved using the suggestions given by Git itself. If there is loss of data, it can be restored from any of the client repositories.

The Spoken Tutorial effort for Git is being contributed by Priya K and coordinated by Nancy Varkey from Spoken Tutorial Project, IIT Bombay.  The domain expertise was provided by Dr Bama Srinivasan, Assistant Professor, Department of Information Science and Technology, CEG Campus, Anna University, Chennai.
