‘MIL Malayalam’ is a core course of 6 credits. The course aims at imparting basic skills and competencies in Malayalam language, an overview of  the development of Malayalam literature, and  a broad introduction to  the various genres in this literature. The course material is  organized in three blocks:

1. Block 1 (Bhashasahithi) introduces the learner to the origin and development of Malayalam as an independent language in the Dravidian family of languages and  its status as a classical language, and  provides a historical  overview of the development of Malayalam literature. Functional Grammar and writing skills in Malayalam are also discussed.

 

2. Block 2 (Sargasahithi 1) gives the learner a sense of the development of creative writing in various genres of Malayalam literature, such as poetry, short story , novel, drama and film script-writing,  over the centuries.  The Units in this Block cover  major trends, and discuss in detail some representative  writing in these genres . 

 

3. Block 3 (Sargasahithi 2) introduces the learner to developments in genres such as autobiography, biography, travel writing and essay,  and discusses some of the most significant writing in these genres in detail. The Block  also includes a brief overview of the varied folk and classical traditions, ritual art forms and festivals of Kerala.

Dr. Malathy A.

Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi

Dr. Malathy A. (Assistant Professor, Selection Grade) joined IGNOU in 2005 and has been involved with language editing of study material, and development and co-ordination of courses of BA (General), BA (Hons.) and Post Graduate Diploma in Book Publishing. A post graduate from the University of Kerala, 

Dr. Malathy A. holds an MPhil in D. H. Lawrence studies from the University of Nottingham, UK, and a PhD in Australian fiction from JNU, New Delhi.  Her research focuses on possibilities of re-interpreting traditional Indian critical concepts for contemporary critical discourse. She is also interested in eco-critical approaches to literary texts to consider the intersections between the human and the non-human worlds. She has presented papers at national and international conferences and published papers on these themes.
